A Guide for Clinical Directors

# Clinical Hypnotherapy vs. Stage Hypnosis vs. Self-Hypnosis Apps

**Short answer:** Clinical hypnotherapy is hypnosis used by a trained practitioner to treat a medical or psychological concern, and it has a research base. Stage hypnosis is entertainment with no clinical safeguards. Self-hypnosis apps are useful for practice between sessions, but their evidence is early and they don't replace a live, credentialed practitioner.

## Clinical hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to treat a medical or psychological concern. An umbrella review of 49 meta-analyses found the largest effects for pain and medical procedures, though the authors raised concerns about the quality of many underlying studies. A 2019 meta-analysis also found hypnosis reduced anxiety, especially combined with other psychological treatment.

## Stage hypnosis

Stage hypnosis is performance. A review of the unwanted effects of hypnosis argues that stage settings lack proper safeguards and that stage hypnotists aren't qualified to manage adverse reactions. It also feeds the myth that people lose control under hypnosis, which Mayo Clinic says is not true.

## Self-hypnosis apps

Apps and recordings can help clients practice relaxation and self-regulation. A large usage study of one app (84,395 users) found stress ratings dropped within sessions, but it had no control group, used a single-item stress rating, and one author co-founded the app. We found no randomized trial of a self-hypnosis app.

## What programs should use

Use clinical hypnotherapy from a credentialed practitioner, coordinated with the treatment team, and consider apps or recordings only as practice between live sessions.

## Where Sybilry fits

Sybilry connects behavioral health and wellness programs with vetted hypnotherapists for on demand telehealth sessions, one-on-one or in groups. Every hypnotherapist in the network is independently credentialed and vetted for behavioral health and co-occurring experience, and a Sybilry account rep coordinates every session. Programs pay only for the sessions they schedule, with no setup fee, retainer, minimum volume or contract, and no added fee to the client.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is stage hypnosis the same as hypnotherapy?

No. Stage hypnosis is entertainment without clinical screening or safeguards. Hypnotherapy is the clinical use of hypnosis by a trained practitioner to address a defined concern.

### Do self-hypnosis apps work?

Early data suggests short-term stress relief within sessions, but the largest study we found had no control group. Apps work best as practice between sessions with a live practitioner.

### Is clinical hypnotherapy evidence-based?

For some uses. Evidence is strongest for pain and procedure-related distress and supportive for anxiety, with weaker or mixed evidence for depression and substance use.
