A Guide for Treatment Programs

Group vs. One-on-One Hypnotherapy for Treatment Programs

Short answer: Group hypnotherapy can reach more clients at a lower cost per person and, in the largest head-to-head trial, was not worse than individual sessions. One-on-one sessions allow more tailoring and are better for clients who need individual attention. Programs can use both: groups for skills and individual sessions for specific goals.

What the research shows

The largest trial comparing formats, the IMAGINE trial (354 adults with irritable bowel syndrome), found adequate relief at 12 months in 49.5% of group participants, 40.8% of individual participants and 22.6% of controls. Group sessions were not inferior to individual sessions, though that finding came from the per-protocol analysis, and the trial was in IBS, not addiction or psychiatric care.

Which clients fit which format

  • Group: clients working on general stress, sleep or self-regulation skills who are comfortable in a group.
  • One-on-one: clients with specific goals, significant trauma histories, or who prefer privacy.
  • Not yet: clients the clinical team screens out, such as some people with severe mental illness or a history of psychosis.

Running a safe group

  • Keep groups small enough for the practitioner to watch each participant.
  • Explain the process and consent at the start; anyone can stop at any time.
  • Don't ask anyone to share more than they choose.
  • Have a plan for a participant who becomes distressed.

Where Sybilry fits

Sybilry connects behavioral health and wellness programs with vetted hypnotherapists for on demand telehealth sessions, one-on-one or in groups. Every hypnotherapist in the network is independently credentialed and vetted for behavioral health and co-occurring experience, and a Sybilry account rep coordinates every session. Programs pay only for the sessions they schedule, with no setup fee, retainer, minimum volume or contract, and no added fee to the client.

Frequently asked questions

Is group hypnotherapy as effective as individual hypnotherapy?

In the largest head-to-head trial, in irritable bowel syndrome, group hypnotherapy was not inferior to individual sessions. We found no similar trials in addiction or psychiatric care.

Is group hypnotherapy cheaper?

Usually, per client, because one practitioner works with several clients in one session.

Can group hypnotherapy be done by telehealth?

Yes. Video groups work when the practitioner can see each participant and there's a plan for anyone who becomes distressed.
