An Evidence Guide for Treatment Programs

# Hypnotherapy for Anxiety, Sleep and Stress in Early Treatment: What the Research Supports

**Short answer:** Research supports hypnosis for anxiety and procedure-related distress, finds it promising but mixed for sleep, and shows the strongest effects for pain. Evidence is weaker for depression and substance use. In early treatment, that makes hypnotherapy a reasonable complement for anxiety, sleep and discomfort, not a stand-alone treatment.

Guide · Updated October 2026

## Anxiety

A 2019 meta-analysis of 15 studies (17 trials) found hypnosis reduced anxiety, with an average effect size of 0.79 at the end of treatment and 0.99 at follow-up, and it worked better combined with other psychological treatment. Only 7 trials had follow-up data. For procedure-related distress, a 2013 meta-analysis reported a moderate effect (0.53).

## Sleep

A 2018 systematic review of 24 studies found 58.3% reported a benefit, 12.5% mixed results and 29.2% no benefit. The authors called hypnosis "promising" but noted small samples, modest study quality, and that only about a third of studies enrolled people with sleep problems.

## Pain and physical discomfort

This is the best-supported use. A 2013 meta-analysis of 34 randomized trials (2,597 patients) in surgery and burn care found a significant reduction in pain (0.44), with smaller effects in the most rigorous studies. An umbrella review of 49 meta-analyses found the largest effects for pain and medical procedures.

## Depression and substance use

A 2024 scoping review of 14 depression studies found most reported benefit, usually with hypnosis added to CBT, but called for controlled trials. For smoking, a Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence and no clear advantage over behavioral support.

## What this means for programs

- Use hypnotherapy for anxiety, sleep and discomfort goals, set with the clinical team.
- Combine it with counseling rather than using it alone.
- Plan a short series of sessions, since most studied protocols use several.
- Screen first and avoid memory-recovery work.

## Where Sybilry fits

Sybilry connects behavioral health and wellness programs with vetted hypnotherapists for on demand telehealth sessions, one-on-one or in groups. Every hypnotherapist in the network is independently credentialed and vetted for behavioral health and co-occurring experience, and a Sybilry account rep coordinates every session. Programs pay only for the sessions they schedule, with no setup fee, retainer, minimum volume or contract, and no added fee to the client.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does hypnotherapy work for anxiety?

Research supports it. A 2019 meta-analysis found a substantial average reduction in anxiety, with better results when hypnosis was combined with other psychological treatment.

### Can hypnotherapy help with insomnia?

It looks promising. A 2018 review found benefit in 58% of studies, but the studies were small and varied in quality.

### Is hypnotherapy effective for depression?

The evidence is early. Most studies are small and test hypnosis added to CBT, and researchers call for more controlled trials.
